Some of the steps in EIA, such as Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEA) may be carried out by consultants registered under the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations. Other steps, such as preparing an EIA report, must be undertaken by a registered consultant.
A formal register of consultants provides the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation (DEPC) with a register of qualified persons that can be referred to whenever external expertise is required. It is also a mechanism to ensure that good quality reports, prepared by qualified persons, are submitted.
To be registered a principal or review consultant you must have completed a recognised post-school qualification and have environmental management experience. Your credentials will be thoroughly scrutinised before you are considered eligible to be registered under the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations.
More information about becoming a registered consultant is available in our guidelines.
