Continuing Regional support for the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Global monitoring Plan (GMP) under the Stockholm Convention in the Pacific Region

The objective of the project is to:

  • Implement the GMP for POPs according to article 16 of the Stockholm Convention on the effectiveness evaluation, by generating data on the concentrations of POPs in the core media; human milk, air and water. The activities will strengthen the national capacity to implement the Global monitoring Plan for POPs
  • Develop a sustainable monitoring plan for POPs for the Pacific Region.

The activities that the Department through the Environmental Protection Division is required to do are:

  • Undertake air sampling
  • Water sampling
  • A 6th round of the human milk survey
  • sampling of major matrices of major national interest and to draft a national report presenting implementation and monitoring results and contribute to the development of a sustainable regional monitoring plan.

The water and air samples are to be collected in three (3) monthly intervals. The project began this year 2017 and should conclude in 2019. A total of 50 milk samples are to be collected in a 2 months period in 2017.
